2025 Mazda CX-70 Revealed as Two-Row CX-90

2025 Mazda CX-70 Revealed as Two-Row CX-90

The official 2025 Mazda CX-70 reveal has finally arrived, and it’s not what most were expecting or frankly hoping for. Mazda took the wraps off the “all-new” Mazda CX-70, unveiling a two-row SUV that’s even more heavily based on the three-row CX-90 than we imagined.

Spot the Difference: Meet the Two-Row CX-70

The first-ever 2025 Mazda CX-70 will arrive in Mazda showrooms starting in Spring 2024 as essentially a two-row version of the Mazda CX-90. In other words, the CX-70 is similarly sized to its three-row SUV sibling, even riding on the same wheelbase. Except, it forgoes a third row for more cargo space.

That’s right; this long-awaited second model in the automaker’s new large vehicle platform is basically a Mazda CX-90 with a third-row delete option. However, there are several styling elements and cabin features that attempt to separate the CX-70 from the nearly identical CX-90 it shares much with.

Mazda CX-70 vs. CX-90: So What’s Different?

The 2025 CX-70 wears blacked-out exterior elements, including a dark grille surround and roof rails, and gets several exclusive features not offered on the three-row CX-90. Restyled front and rear bumpers, new 21-inch wheel designs, a reclining second row, underfloor storage, and new Red Nappa leather seat upholstery are a few of the distinctive Mazda CX-70 features not currently offered on the “larger” CX-90.

What Else Remains the Same?

Beyond the striking aesthetic resemblance to the three-row CX-90, the Mazda CX-70 also gets the same powertrains, namely two variants of the carmaker’s new 3.3-liter inline-six turbo engine with a mild-hybrid setup and a 2.5-liter PHEV powertrain, found on the plug-in hybrid model. Inline-six options range from 280 horsepower to 340 horsepower, while the CX-70 PHEV should deliver 323 horsepower, just like the CX-90 PHEV.

Mazda has yet to release full specs, details, trims, and pricing for its new two-row SUV model. However, given the similar or even identical dimensions of the two Mazda large platform SUVs, we expect the CX-70 to offer about 40 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second row and up to 75 cubic feet for cargo when the second row is lowered.

If you had been following our Mazda CX-70 pre-release coverage, you’ll know that most were expecting the first-ever CX-70 to arrive as a shortened version of the CX-90, or a lightly altered, wide-body variant of the overseas CX-60 midsize SUV.

Recent reports had signaled the CX-70 might merely be a CX-90 without a third row, but it was still hard to believe, until now.

Reading through Mazda CX-70 reddit and social media comments, it’s clear that for most who have been eagerly awaiting the CX-70 debut, the SUV’s reveal has brought disappointment. Many were hoping for a shorter CX-60-like SUV to arrive for the North American market. Still, the CX-70 Mazda revealed does fill a unique gap in the market, so we’ll have to wait and see how it is ultimately received on dealership lots.
