Mazda Confirms CX-5 Hybrid SUV Coming Soon

It was all but confirmed until now. Mazda quietly announced the upcoming arrival of a new third-generation Mazda CX-5 in recent financial reporting documents, including a first-ever CX-5 Hybrid model.

The CX-5 Hybrid is a long-anticipated model. While the current CX-5 remains a top-seller for Mazda and a competitively equipped option in the compact crossover SUV segment, it can’t quite match the fuel efficiency of more recently redesigned SUVs and hybrid models in its class.

Mazda Hybrid Power Coming to the New CX-5

As we speculated in our initial coverage of the upcoming Mazda CX-5 Hybrid, the automaker has now confirmed the CX-5 Hybrid will be motivated by a new hybrid powertrain developed internally at Mazda.

So, this fresh entry in the CX-5 lineup will not utilize a Toyota-sourced powertrain like the CX-50 Hybrid but instead feature a Mazda-developed engine likely fitted with hybrid tech jointly developed with Toyota.

As this is a Mazda-developed hybrid powertrain setup, we anticipate this new hybrid CX-5 will be fitted with a version of the carmaker’s Skyactiv-Drive eight-speed automatic transmission and i-Activ AWD, similar to the e-Skyactiv PHEV powertrain found in large-platform premium models like the new Mazda CX-70 and CX-90.

What’s the Availability of the First-Ever CX-5 Hybrid?

Will this new CX-5 Hybrid be immediately available when the next-gen CX-5 debuts? Or, will we have to wait up to several years after the gas engine model arrives, as is the case with the long-awaited CX-50 Hybrid?

Mazda declined to provide more details on powertrain specifics or a targeted CX-5 release date. However, given the aging condition of the current CX-5 (it’s been on sale since 2017), we expect the next-gen CX-5 and its available hybrid powertrain will debut by early 2025 and be released as a 2026 model.
