Mazda CX-5 Redesign: The Next-Generation CX-5
Mazda’s top-selling model globally, the CX-5, is growing long in the tooth, which leads to the question: when will there be a Mazda CX-5 redesign?
There has been increasing speculation among current CX-5 drivers, Mazda enthusiasts, CX-5 shoppers, and even Mazda dealers as to whether the Mazda CX-5 will be redesigned with an all-new model, or discontinued.
If you have been following the recent Mazda naming structure, then it’s easy to see why many are anticipating that Mazda might discontinue the CX-5. With the similarly sized Mazda CX-50, smaller CX-30, three-row CX-90, and upcoming midsize CX-70 joining the Mazda crossover SUV lineup, the single-digit CX-5 model might seem out of place.
Still, there’s reason for the many Mazda CX-5 fans to rejoice. Read on to learn why.
All-New, Next-Generation Mazda CX-5 Confirmed?
According to recent online reporting, an all-new, next-gen Mazda CX-5 is all but confirmed as in development. As the Mazda CX-5 has been a sales leader for the brand for many years and is a globally successful product for Mazda, its continuation and redesign make perfect sense.
So, when should we expect the third-generation Mazda CX-5 to grace local dealership lots and streets?
The Anticipated Arrival of an All-New Mazda CX-5
A next-generation, all-new Mazda CX-5 is anticipated to arrive in 2025, for either the 2025 or 2026 model year. This may seem like a long time off considering the current second-generation Mazda CX-5 has been available since the 2017 model year, but the next-gen should arrive in fairly short order.
With the 2024 Mazda CX-5 release date likely right around the corner, we shouldn’t have to wait too much longer to discover what’s in store for an all-new model for 2025 or 2026.
Thanks to its refresh for the 2022 model year, the aging Mazda CX-5 is holding its own against newer, more recently redesigned models. In fact, the CX-5 is still selling quite well, even compared to the newcomer Mazda CX-50 compact crossover that’s of a similar size.
What to Expect from the Next-Generation CX-5
Mazda has continually updated and upgraded its popular CX-5 compact crossover over the years, which explains why this CUV is still considered one of the most handsome offerings in the compact SUV segment. While the current CX-5 continues to age like fine wine, we should expect an all-new version of this Mazda CUV to feature a substantial redesign that takes this crossover into the next decade.
Here’s a quick look at what to expect from the next-gen CX-5 redesign:
Updated Gas Engine and New Hybrid Powertrain Options
While we expect Mazda’s proven 2.5-liter Skyactiv-G inline four-cylinder engine to continue powering the next-generation CX-5 in base form, we anticipate there will be some new powertrain offerings as well.
The 2.5-liter gas engine and the turbocharged variant of the current-generation Mazda CX-5 could arrive in an all-new 2025 or 2026 model with a mild-hybrid setup or even further electrification.
The new Mazda PHEV (or plug-in hybrid electric vehicle) powertrain that’s debuted in the all-new 2024 Mazda CX-90 and will become available in upcoming models like the Mazda CX-70 could make an appearance in the next-gen CX-5.
Or, a new hybrid powertrain jointly developed between Mazda and Toyota could power an all-new Mazda CX-5, not to mention a hybrid variant of the CX-50.
Given that we expect the Mazda CX-5 to continue being the competitively priced alternative to other mainstream compact SUVs like the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V, we don’t anticipate the next-generation Mazda CX-5 redesign to offer the automaker’s new inline-6 engine. A naturally aspirated four-cylinder, turbo-four, and potentially a hybrid four-cylinder should power the next-gen Mazda CX-5 for 2026 or 2025.
Sporty On-Road Design Language
If an all-new Mazda CX-5 redesign is going to arrive and be sold alongside the similarly sized Mazda CX-50, then we suspect the next-generation CX-5 will continue with its sleek and sporty design language inside and out, catering to the majority of compact SUV drivers who keep their vehicle on the pavement.
That way, the redesigned CX-5 and its sporty on-road persona will keep enough distance between it and the more rugged-looking Mazda CX-50 that caters to the adventurous all-terrain crowd.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Mazda discontinuing the CX-5?
No, according to the latest reports, Mazda will not be discontinuing the CX-5 as has been widely speculated. Instead, an all-new, next-generation Mazda CX-5 should arrive for the 2025 or 2026 model year. It appears the top-selling Mazda model for many years, the CX-5, will live on in a third generation and be sold alongside the more rugged compact SUV offering, the CX-50, in select markets.
Will there be an all-new Mazda CX-5 redesign?
An all-new Mazda CX-5 redesign isn’t expected until the 2025 or 2026 model year. The 2024 model year sees Mazda debut the first-ever CX-90 three-row SUV and the two-row CX-70 model isn’t far off either. That leaves a Mazda CX-5 redesign likely not coming to fruition until at least the 2025 model year or maybe postponed for another year until 2026.
Will the 2025 Mazda CX-5 release date signal an all-new version?
The 2025 Mazda CX-5 release date could potentially debut an all-new version of this popular compact crossover SUV model. However, a full Mazda CX-5 redesign might not arrive until the following year as a 2026 model. Since the current CX-5 arrived as a 2017 model, the redesign of this popular yet aging compact crossover SUV shouldn’t be far off now.
What are potential changes for the third-generation Mazda CX-5?
Potential Mazda CX-5 changes for the all-new, third-generation model include new engine options, including a possible hybrid powertrain utilizing a 2.5-liter inline four-cylinder and an electric motor, either as a mild hybrid or conventional hybrid. The next-generation Mazda CX-5 will also bring a new design, inside and out, likely including design language from other more recent Mazda crossover SUV models.
