Mazda CX-5 Redesign: The Next-Generation CX-5

Mazda’s top-selling model globally, the CX-5, is growing long in the tooth, which leads to the question: when will there be a Mazda CX-5 redesign?
There had been increasing speculation among current CX-5 drivers, Mazda enthusiasts, CX-5 shoppers, and even Mazda dealers as to whether the Mazda CX-5 will be redesigned with an all-new model, or discontinued.
If you have been following the recent Mazda naming structure, then it’s easy to see why many were thinking that Mazda might discontinue the CX-5 or rename it. With the similarly sized Mazda CX-50, smaller CX-30, midsize two-row CX-70, and three-row CX-90 joining the Mazda crossover SUV lineup, the single-digit CX-5 model might seem out of place.
Still, there’s reason for the many Mazda CX-5 fans to rejoice. Read on to learn why.
All-New, Next-Generation Mazda CX-5 Confirmed
Mazda says the third-generation Mazda CX-5 is in development and will offer several new powertrain options. The ageing current CX-5 remains a popular, top-selling model for the brand but it’s time for an all-new edition to replace it.
So, when should we expect the third-generation Mazda CX-5 to grace local dealership lots and streets?
The Anticipated Arrival of an All-New Mazda CX-5
A next-generation Mazda CX-5 is expected to arrive by 2027. This may still seem like a long time off considering the current second-generation Mazda CX-5 has been available since the 2017 model year, but the next-gen should debut in fairly short order, based on recent spy shots.
With the 2025 Mazda CX-5 now available and remaining largely the same as the year before, we shouldn’t have to wait too much longer to discover what’s in store for the all-new model.
Thanks to its refresh for the 2022 model year, the ageing Mazda CX-5 is holding its own against newer, more recently redesigned models. In fact, the CX-5 is still selling well, even compared to the newcomer Mazda CX-50 compact crossover that’s of a similar size.

What to Expect from the Next-Generation CX-5
Mazda has continually updated and upgraded its popular CX-5 compact crossover over the years, which explains why this CUV is still considered one of the most handsome offerings in the compact SUV segment. While the current CX-5 continues to age like fine wine, we should expect an all-new version of this Mazda CUV to feature a substantial redesign that takes this crossover into the next decade.

Here’s a quick look at what to expect from the next-gen CX-5 redesign:
New Skyactiv-Z Engine and First-Ever Electrified Hybrid Options
While we expect Mazda’s newly developed Skyactiv-Z inline four-cylinder engine to power the next-generation CX-5 in base form, there will be a first-ever CX-5 Hybrid option as well. Mazda has already confirmed the CX-5 Hybrid is coming.
Beyond those two powertrains, a turbocharged variant of the new Skyactiv-Z inline-four could also arrive after the third-generation CX-5 debuts in 2027.
Additional electrified options could be in the works as well. The 2.5-liter PHEV powertrain offered in the larger CX-90 and CX-70 models could fit in the next-gen CX-5.
Mazda’s North American CEO recently hinted at a fully electric CX-5 in development, too. However, we wouldn’t anticipate a PHEV or full EV version to be available until later in the next-gen CX-5’s product cycle, given the automaker’s multi-phase electrification plans.
We look forward to welcoming the new Skyactiv-Z and CX-5 Hybrid models in 2027, but we’ll have to wait for more details about any further electrification or turbocharging of the new CX-5.
Sporty On-Road Design Language
Since the redesigned Mazda CX-5 will be sold alongside the similarly sized Mazda CX-50, we suspect the next-generation CX-5 will continue with its sleek and sporty design language inside and out, catering to the majority of compact SUV drivers who keep their vehicle on the pavement.

That way, the redesigned CX-5 and its sporty on-road persona will keep enough distance between it and the more rugged-looking Mazda CX-50 that caters to lovers of the great outdoors.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Mazda discontinuing the CX-5?
No, according to the latest reports, Mazda will not be discontinuing the CX-5 as had been speculated elsewhere. Instead, an all-new, next-generation Mazda CX-5 should arrive for the 2027 model year. This top-selling Mazda model will also gain a new CX-5 Hybrid variant in its third generation and be sold alongside the more rugged CX-50 compact crossover in select markets.
Will there be an all-new Mazda CX-5 redesign?
An all-new Mazda CX-5 redesign isn’t expected to debut until 2027. The 2024 and 2025 model years saw Mazda debut the first-ever CX-90 three-row SUV and the two-row CX-70 model. The rugged CX-50 Hybrid also debuted for 2025. That leaves a Mazda CX-5 redesign likely not coming to fruition until at least the 2026 model year or maybe postponed for another year until 2027.
Will the 2026 Mazda CX-5 release date signal an all-new version?
The 2025 Mazda CX-5 release date passed without an all-new version of this popular compact crossover SUV model. So, a full Mazda CX-5 redesign might not arrive until the 2026 or 2027 model. Since the current CX-5 arrived as a 2017 model, the redesign of this popular yet aging compact crossover SUV shouldn’t be far off now.
What are changes to the third-generation Mazda CX-5?
Potential Mazda CX-5 changes for the all-new, third-generation model include new engine options, including a new Skyactiv-Z gas engine and a Mazda-developed hybrid powertrain utilizing a 2.5-liter inline four-cylinder and an electric motor. The next-generation CX-5 will also bring fresh styling inside and out, likely including design language from other newer Mazda crossover SUV models like the CX-70 and CX-90.
