1993 Mazda RX-7 R1: Mazda Gem of the Day

1993 Mazda RX-7 R1: Mazda Gem of the Day

This black beauty, a 1993 Mazda RX-7 R1, was listed on eBay in August of 2021 with just over 36k miles. It boasts R1 trim factory features like front and rear spoilers, a front strut tower brace, grippy suede sport seats, dual oil coolers and more.

According to the listing, it is one of only 138 R1 examples produced in Brilliant Black over a black interior for the 1993 model year.

This FD RX-7 R1 was listed with just 36,380 miles. While the engine is completely original and in factory form, a few modifications have been performed.

Replacing the factory 16″ alloy wheels are 17″ alloys from Motegi. Those who like the factory five-spoke wheel design may find these Motegi wheels a tasteful upgrade. The wheel design is a bit more angular than the stock rims, and the finish is slightly darker, too.

Inside the cockpit are those rare suede seats that only came on 1993 R1 and ’94-’95 R2 models.

Overall, the interior is in great condition. The seats show very little wear. However, the cabin is not without some issues that need addressing. The seller notes that the stereo does not work, the passenger side door handle pull is missing, and the air conditioning requires servicing.

The motor is 100% stock, and the seller notes the following maintenance was recently performed:

  • Oil change
  • New NGK plugs
  • New belts, air filter, battery, fuel pump and fuel filter
  • Rebuilt stock shifter

Take a look at the eBay listing here for more details, photos and even some videos. In the additional photos, you’ll see some of the minor dents, dings and imperfections that keep this low-mileage FD from being a completely pristine example of one of the top sports cars of the ’90s.

Stay tuned for more FD RX-7s like this one in future installments of our Mazda Gem of the Day series.
