Mazda MX-30 R-EV Availability: When It Should Come to the U.S.
Mazda has been tight-lipped about the full list of markets that will receive the new Mazda MX-30 R-EV model thus far, so we’re left up to speculation regarding Mazda MX-30 R-EV availability for now. However, the automaker expects U.K. availability starting this summer, along with other European markets to follow.
Mazda and rotary fans in the United States are left to wait and see whether Mazda MX-30 R-EV availability is confirmed for America.
Why We Should Expect the MX-30 R-EV in the U.S. Soon
There are two main reasons American plug-in hybrid car shoppers and rotary engine enthusiasts alike should feel confident the upcoming MX-30 R-EV is coming stateside.
Firstly, the last time a production rotary engine car was developed — the Mazda RX-8 — it was reported that Mazda USA, its dealers, and the American market of rotary enthusiasts were the reason the RX-EVOLVE concept car continued into a production Mazda RX-8.
Secondly, Mazda is likely looking to recoup the R&D costs associated with the MX-30 EV model and MX-30 electrified platform as a whole. The Mazda MX-30 EV has not sold well globally, mainly due to its limited range but also because of Mazda’s limited production. Admittedly, the Mazda MX-30 EV was simply a first step, a maiden voyage for Mazda into the EV game: it was never meant to be in high demand or high supply.
So, given the immense R&D costs associated with developing the Mazda MX-30 EV, it only makes sense that Mazda would like to take the next step in its electrification process with the same platform, this time with a long-range version with potentially far higher production numbers.
In a way, this reminds us of the short-lived Mazda RX-7 Convertible during the RX-7 FC era. Mazda developed an RX-7 Convertible at the tail end of the FC RX-7s run, from 1988 to 1991. It may have seemed a little random at the time — and the car didn’t sell that well — but the public soon learned that Mazda was about to release a new sports car developed from the ground up as a convertible: the Mazda MX-5 Miata. It turned out that lessons and features from the RX-7 Convertible helped shape the development of the first Miata roadster, headrest-mounted speakers and all.
When Should the Mazda MX-30 R-EV Arrive in the United States?
Given that the U.K. and other select European markets are scheduled to receive the first Mazda MX-30 R-EV models in the summer of 2023, we expect United States availability will follow in late 2023 or by mid-2024 as a 2024 model year vehicle.
No matter your feelings on the Mazda MX-30 e-Skyactiv R-EV powertrain representing the return of the rotary, it should be interesting to see how this unique Mazda plug-in hybrid with a rotary engine works, and how it sells. Stay tuned for more details on Mazda MX-30 R-EV availability in America.

Mazda has not yet confirmed whether the Mazda MX-30 R-EV will be available in the United States.
